A mental health unit can be an excellent use of excess capacity. Typically, a specific unit can be developed, e.g., geropsych, that reaches an underserved population in your catchment area and with professional management, the unit is likely to contribute a substantial amount to your bottom line.

In a start-up situation, BHC provides turnkey services. We will begin by helping choose and design space (with your architect), provide Policy and Procedure Manuals, hire and train staff (some will be on our payroll, most will be on your payroll), consult with your finance department on chart of accounts and billing, oversee the state licensing and Medicare exemption survey process, and provide a sophisticated outcomes study and Community Liaison process.
Yes.
A Geropsych Unit is an inpatient psychiatric unit that is designed and staffed to meet the unique needs of seniors. The psychiatric staff is medically trained so that both psychiatric and medical problems can be treated on the unit. While on the unit, patients require a primary psychiatric diagnosis; however, the unit works with primary care physicians so that concurrent medical problems can be treated.
Geropsych Units are very popular because of two primary factors. Demographics show a growing and aging, underserved population. Most mental health problems of the elderly are attributed to the aging process rather than a unique and treatable problem. The second reason is reimbursement. Geropsych Units can become exempt from the PPS system and be reimbursed on a cost-based basis (to a cap). This dramatically increases the likelyhood of a profitable unit.
